Mission Statement
I first joined a Junior Drum and Bugle Corps in 1996.
That summer I saw many things that made drumcorps both fun and unique. Some
of the most pleasurable experiences were not during rehearsals, free days or
performances. Rather, they were after the shows, and took place in parking
lots. Several members from different drumlines would get together and play
"lot licks" that we either all knew, or had made up together during
these sessions. The parking lot was filled with noise, music, camaraderie and
FUN.
By the time I aged-out in 2001, these events had died
down. Corps members still drummed in the lot on occasion, but not as
frequently as before and usually did not do so with members of other corps.
The mission of this web site
is to encourage drumming in the lot and to make lot licks accessible to the
drumcorps community. By learning licks from this site, more drumcorps members
will know the same licks and will be more inclined to play together in the
lot.
The music on this site can
be freely distributed as long as profit (including monetary) is not made by
the distribution. Feel free to share hard copies of music from this site. If
you would like to share electronic copies of anything on this site, you may
do so but please refer the recipient to this website. I still reserve the
copyright for all content on this site that I (Devin Namaky) personally have
created.
If you would like to submit
sheet music, or audio/video recordings of the music contained on this site, email me and I will post it
and credit the performer/submitter.
Updates
06/13/2003 - Check out the new discussion forum in the music
section.
06/11/2003 - It's been a while since I updated the site last
so I uploaded two new licks. Street Fame is a quad lick that I learned from
some North Texas guys in the late 90s. Spice Rack is another lick by
Tim Fairbanks.
04/10/2003 - I finally added the video of Rasputin. Thanks to
Michael Winterberg for the use of web space. Also, I have added a lick
written by Brian Smith called Drive.
03/28/2003 - I tried uploading video of Rasputin but the max
file size for reference is 256 kb. I'll have to figure something else out.
02/24/2003 - The snare part for Sprezzatura has been uploaded.
Thanks to Tim Fairbanks for
writing it.
02/07/2003 - I corrected the around in measure 6 of
Sprezzatura.
02/05/2003 - The quad part for Rasputin is up for download.
One link will give you both parts. I also uploaded a lick I named
Sprezzatura.
02/04/2003 - I've uploaded the snare part for a lick called
Rasputin. I'll be putting together the quad part shortly.
01/29/2003 - This site is up and running! The first post is an
exercise that I wrote for the 2003 Glassmen. It's not exactly a lick
but I'm working on some... The first actual lick will be released
during the first half of February. Check back!

Spice Rack - Please be patient
while I explain this one. First, measures 2 and 6 are spice measures. The
exercise is designed to be played by more than one person at a time. One
person picks the spice for the 2nd measure and one person picks the spice for
the 6th measure. The spice is any lick that fills the space of the measure.
For instance, you could use four 16th note based flam drags as a spice.
You can vary the metrics
too. For example, you could use two 16th based book reports and eight 32nd
note singles as a spice. And remember a different person picks each spice,
then you play the exercise together with the spices inserted on top of the
spice bars. And, most importantly, YOU CANNOT BREAK ON YOUR OWN SPICE.
Breaking on your own spice entitles the other player(s) to ridicule you.
The last thing that is not
written in the music (And yes, I am totally serious about this) is that there
is a little interlude you must do after every rep of the exercise. While
hitting the last shot you must kick up your left hand (traditional grip) so
the stick points upward (& of 4, freeze on 1). Release the stick so it
falls towards the floor (& of 1), then flip your hand over and catch it
(count 2). Bring the stick back to playing position (count 3). Play a buzzed
5 stroke with a shot release (& of 3, shot on 4). Play three right hand
accented flams (& of 4 into count 5). Bring your sticks in (& of 5).
Hit the drum one-handed with both sticks in the right hand (count 6). Bring
the sticks in (& of 6). Bring the sticks out in both hands to normal
playing position (count 7), and then the designated person continues the
tap-off on counts 8, 9 and 10 as if count 7 was the release.
Maybe I should have
transcribed that part. = )
Street Fame - I decided to keep
it simple and name this one after a 2Pac song. I used a variation on this in
my 1999 I&E solo. This is another NT lick.
Drive - Brian Smith wrote this by hacking around
to the Incubus song "Drive." Try playing along with it.
Sprezzatura - A sprezzatura is
someone who makes the most difficult things seem effortless. Evan taught a couple
of us BlueQ this NT lick in 1998. I've transcribed it to share the love.
Download the snare part,
written by Tim Fairbanks.
Rasputin
- For those of you who don't know, Rasputin's real name was Grigory
Yfimovich. He was an Eastern Orthodox holy man. He was able to control Czar
Nicholas II because the Czar thought that Rasputin could ease his son's hemophilia.
Rasputin's abuse of power led to his death. Nobles tried to poison him, but
it had no effect. Instead, they shot him and threw him in a river. A Rasputin
is someone who won't die. Watch the video. Right click to
download. Name it as an mp4.
Triplet Accent - Triplet
Accent is actually a grid (much like the 4-2-1 triplet grid by Float). Leave
the accents as they are and start by adding a diddle to the first partial of
each triplet in the exercise... then try a flam... the possibilities are
endless!... The quad arounds are Side 1, Side 2, Jungle In, and Suburban.
